If you’re looking to find BFH coffee shopping at Walmart, Sams Club or Starbucks you should probably stop reading right now. But if you care about what’s happening outside the major corporate grocery world and looking for retailer and coffee working for better environment, healthier choices and sustainable communities visit Local Harvest and keep reading.

Local Harvest Grocery Store

Beans for Hope coffee is now available at Local Harvest Grocery store as of Wednesday, February 13. Located in South City, the grocery store is dedicated to selling high-quality St. Louis-area and organic products. Local Harvest is the first grocery store to offer the St. Louis-based Beans For Hope coffee and offers both the light and dark blends.

“We worked to get our coffee in Local Harvest because we have a common mission,” said Wilman Ortega, founder and owner of Beans For Hope coffee company. “We both support sustainable development, which is a movement that combines the necessity to fill human needs for food while preserving the quality of the environment.”

As a third-generation coffee farmer, Ortega understands the need to support these farmers who are working to provide quality products to consumers while preserving the environment and supporting their families. The coffee company’s mission is to improve current coffee trade practices and to promote positive developments in education, healthcare and lifestyle in small coffee farming towns in Guatemala.

“Our mission extends beyond just supporting positive growth in the general infrastructure of Guatemalan coffee farms,” Ortega said. “As a St. Louis-based company we find it important to support other companies and organizations within our own community.”

Beans For Hope coffee is imported from select small coffee farms in Guatemala to St. Louis where it is roasted, packaged and sold.

“We pay well above fair trade minimums to all coffee farmers by eliminating the middleman and investing profits from coffee sales into community products for one farming village, La Industria,” Ortega said. “Our coffee is also made from some of the highest-quality beans in the region, yet is no more expensive than other specialty coffees.”

Beans For Hope is looking to expand into other grocery stores in St. Louis and around the country in the upcoming months. Apart from Local Harvest, the coffee is only sold at local farmers markets and through their web site.
“The only way we can continue paying more than fair prices to the small coffee farmers in Guatemala, support their infrastructure and development, teaming up with other “good cause” organizations and supporting St. Louis organizations and businesses is by exponentially increasing sales of our coffee,” said Ortega.

Kudos to Beans for Hope. As a reseller of green coffee beans for home roasters, I always look for direct relationships with farmers because that is one of the ways for the farmers to better their lives.
